The Short Version
Buy the dealer before you buy the machine. That's the conclusion I keep coming back to after reviewing Caterpillar equipment for most of the past four years. A Caterpillar can be an excellent machine, but the brand is only the first layer. The history, the service records, and the support network around that specific serial number matter far more.
A Caterpillar purchase with no service history and no practical parts support is not a deal; it's a liability. In 2024, I rejected about 9% of the ready-to-sell units that came through my inspection dock for problems that did not show up in the photos or on the hour meter. Most of them could have been caught by a buyer who knew where to look.
I'm not here to knock Caterpillar. I'm here to keep people from treating the logo like a warranty.
Why I Get a Vote
I'm a quality/compliance manager at a heavy equipment dealer that also rents machines. I inspect units before they go to customers, and I approve supplier repairs before the machine goes back in the fleet. I've held up deliveries because a tire had a sidewall bulge and because a fuel line was routed two inches too close to a hot manifold. In this job, no one thanks you for the stops. They thank you when the unit doesn't fail on the first rain-soaked week.
I do not get a commission when a unit sells. I get paid to keep the bad ones from leaving. That changes what I look at.
Caterpillar Farm Equipment: Check the Work, Not the Paint
When I say Caterpillar farm equipment, I'm not picturing a hay baler or a combine. The Cat machines that make sense on a farm are usually a backhoe, a compact track loader, a small excavator, or a wheel loader used for drainage, feed pads, land clearing, and material handling. They work in mud, dust, and damp sheds, and they sit outside between projects.
The first mistake is treating hours as the whole story. Hours are just a clock. A unit with 2,000 hours and no service record is a bigger gamble than a unit with 4,000 hours and an oil sample history. I would rather show a customer a dirty machine with clean records than a washed machine with a blank story.
Tires and Undercarriage: The Wear Items That Hide Costs
On wheel machines, check tires before you check the cab. Look at date codes and tread depth. Is one side much newer? Are there heat cracks along the sidewall or chunks missing from the tread? A loader tire that was abused can fail in the middle of a job, and a set of good tires can cost more than the buyer expects.
On track machines, undercarriage condition is the big dollar item. Look for signs of wear on pins, bushings, and track rails. A shiny, polished track does not mean maintained; it can mean loose tension and high wear. If you don't know how to measure it, ask a local dealer or a technician before you make an offer.
Open the radiator cap only when the engine is cool. Dark brown residue in the overflow bottle tells me someone used a stop-leak, or oil is mixing with coolant. Brown sludge is not a color preference; it is history that needs investigating.
Emissions Equipment Is Part of the Machine
In the U.S., newer non-road Cat engines use EPA Tier 4 Final emissions equipment, which generally means DPF or diesel exhaust fluid components. If someone removed those systems, the machine may not be legal for regular use, and resale value could be hurt. Treat an emissions delete as a legal risk, not a performance upgrade. If a seller advertises it as a benefit, walk away.
Caterpillar Generators: Demand Load-Test Evidence
Let's talk about generators. A search for 'generator Caterpillar' will pull up plenty of used packages with clean paint and low hours. Do not be seduced by the package. The engine is only one part of the system.
Starting a generator without load does not prove the generator can do its real job. The engine might be fine, but the cooling system may not reject the heat, and the alternator may not hold voltage under full current. NFPA 110, the standard for emergency and standby power systems, is built around this uncomfortable fact: generators fail when they are not exercised under the conditions that matter.
Open the fuel water separator if possible. Dark brown, sludgy fuel or a brown ring at the top of the filter indicates microbial growth. That will clog injectors and leave you without power at the worst moment. It's not old fuel. It is contaminated fuel.
I know sports analogies don't usually belong in an article about heavy equipment, but bear with me. A coach prepping to face the Knicks does not ask for a player's season average if he wants to know how that player performs against that specific opponent. If the player is Derrick White, the coach wants White stats vs Knicks—same player, one opponent, clearer signal. Equipment is no different. The spec sheet is the season average. A load-test run under your expected load and site conditions is the matchup stat. If the seller cannot provide something close, you are buying potential instead of evidence.
Zero-Load Starts Do Not Count
We had a customer buy a used Cat generator from an online auction. It idled in the trailer, started cleanly, and the seller had included a recent service sheet. Then we put it under load and it shut down at about 80% because the radiator fan was rubbing the shroud. A cracked mounting bracket had been hidden by the typical no-load demonstration. Looking back, I should have insisted on a load test before the money moved. Now I tell buyers to add a contingent load-test clause to every purchase agreement.
Before making an offer, call your local Cat dealer and ask if they service this exact model. A machine is only as useful as the parts path behind it. The dealer locator works, but a human voice will tell you if the part is next day or three weeks.
Where My Advice Has Limits
I have to be honest about my sample size. My inspection experience covers dealer fleet units and rental returns, mostly wheel loaders, track loaders, backhoes, and standby generators in the 50–200 kW range. I have less experience with giant mining trucks or 2 MW critical power plants. If you are in that world, your buying process should involve factory commissioning engineers and contract warranty language, not only a pre-purchase inspection.
And if you buy a used generator for a weekend cabin where losing power is not dangerous, you can relax some of this. The same rules don't carry the same weight when failure costs comfort instead of production. Use your judgment.
