But for the primary pump on a machine that earns us $4,200 per day when it's in the dirt, I buy new. That's not budget flexing—it's expected value. If a reman unit has even a slightly higher failure rate, the added downtime risk eats the upfront savings. One thing I'll add: if you go reman, use a dealer's exchange program rather than buying from an independent reman shop. 4. Where is the best place to buy Caterpillar hydraulic pumps?

For anything with a genuine Cat part number, I stay with an authorized dealer. I won't pretend dealer pricing is fun, but there are real reasons: the dealer backs the warranty locally, and they can verify parts against Cat's own system.

Here's the ugly side nobody talks about: counterfeit pumps have flooded online marketplaces. We bought a "new, factory sealed" pump from a listing once and it failed eight months later. When the dealer looked at the numbers on the housing, they weren't in Cat's database. That was a $2,000 lesson (surprise, surprise). Now I verify any suspicious part through the dealer before installation. For non-critical parts where aftermarket doesn't matter, an established online supplier works fine—just know what you're buying and what warranty you're not getting.

5. Does pickup truck delivery beat freight shipping?

Now the rule is: the old core goes into the return crate the same day the new pump is installed. No exceptions. Another time, a core sat in the bed of a pickup truck overnight and rusted in a rainstorm. The dealer almost rejected that one too. 7. How to draw a realistic pump replacement schedule (and budget)

I'll be straight with you—I'm not an engineer, so I can't tell you how to draw a hydraulic schematic. What I can tell you is how to draw a budget line you can defend in a finance meeting.

Track every pump failure by machine for at least two years: machine hours at replacement, total repair cost, and days of downtime. Then look at the pattern. In our fleet, the 336 excavators averaged 4,200 hours between pump replacements. The 950 loaders went 7,000+. That told us we were pushing the 336s too far. We moved them to a 3,500-hour preventive replacement interval, and unplanned downtime costs on those machines dropped about 23%. That translated to about $8,400 per year—enough to make the CFO happy.

There's no universal replacement interval. But if you feed the data enough time, the pattern will show itself. That's the most valuable thing I've learned in six years of buying parts for this company. I don't know if the exact numbers will look the same for you, but I'd bet you'll find something similar hiding in your own records.
